Subject: kpathsea and ls-R

Under pressure from my network administrator (I look after application
programs at my site, including TeX) I have caused all our kpathsea-using
programs to use *only* the ls-R file (i.e. never to do any direct filestore
searches) when a file under our TeX root (here, `/sys/tex') must be found.

My network administrator was *very* concerned about the high network load
imposed by kpathsea-using programs. The use of the ls-R file to eliminate
file store searches if the file being searched for was found therein did
not satisfy him. (High - short - loads are still seen when the filename is not
found in the index file.) The only impact on the user is that they now see a
`file already exists' message from MakeTeXPK when a search is made for a
previously-generated pk font file whose name has not yet been recorded in ls-R.
(This simply means that I have had to cause ls-R to be regenerated from time
to time.)

What about an option in the distributed Makefiles to recognise this course
officially? Some may think it overkill, but sites with large (and old)
networks will see that this request makes sense.
